So I have been on a fitness kick lately-if you follow me on Instagram you may already know this. I’ve taken up jogging, at home work outs, and I’m making it a point to drink lots of water. All great things! You know what’s not so great? Sweating. I don’t like it, I detest it actually. One of the things I hate most about sweating, other than, well it creates stink, is what it can do to my skin.
Sweat can cause breakouts and if the right products aren’t used, sweating can cause irritation and all sorts of bad to otherwise healthy skin. But hey, it’s part of what happens when you try to get the ol’ bod into shape, so I need to make the best of it.
When I was asked to review FRE, a new line of skincare (is that one word or two?!) made specifically for women that sweat, I was intrigued. The timing was kind of perfect as I’d recently noticed that my regular skincare products were making my face a bit stingy when I ran outdoors. So I decided to give the 123FRE set a try. The promise is that it’s a 3 step skincare solution for women who break a sweat. I would never recommend a product that I don’t use and love myself, so when I received the package, I used it every day for a month before I sat down to write this review.
The biggest issues I faced (besides my face stinging in the sun), were redness, occasional breakouts, and at this stage in my life, I worried about aging. The best skin care for women over 40, or 50 isn’t easy to find, so I was certainly willing to give it a go!
The 123FRE Set is ‘Purify Me’ Cleanser, ‘Revive Me’ Deep Replenishing Serum, and ‘Protect Me’ Defense Facial Moisturizer.
1st Step: Protect Me
The first day I used the FRE Skincare line, I realized that my skin didn’t sting. I figured that was due to the FRE Protect Me Defense Facial Moisturizer, complete with SPF 30. It didn’t feel like my skin was irritated like my usual sunscreen. Right then I had a feeling I was going to like this skincare.
I liked that Protect Me was light, not thick and goopy like many other sunscreens. It has a light scent, and left my skin feeling soft. It didn’t drip into my eyes when I sweat, that was a huge plus for me. The only drawback is that it’s only an SPF of 30. The sunscreen I used before was an SPF of 50. 30 SPF is actually pretty good, but in my 40’s, I’ve been recommended a higher SPF. For that reason, I go back and forth between both suncreens. I use Protect Me when I exercise outdoors, and my regular brand when I do regular non sweaty stuff like my kid’s sports. Unless I know it will be hot and I will likely sweat, then I switch it back to Protect Me. Bottomline, I like FRE Protect Me much better for sweaty situations.
2nd Step: Purify Me
The Purify Me Hydrating Facial Cleanser was pretty good. It’s meant to be used post work out to cleanse away all the nastiness your face accumulates when you sweat up a storm. I like that it has exfoliating beads so it feels like it’s actually doing something. I have exfoliated daily since my early 20’s. I attribute that to my looking younger than my age. Don’t ask me my specific age, just know that I’ve been told I look younger than I’m supposed to! My cleanser needs to feel as if it’s working, like immediately. The exfoliation does that for me. The claim is that Purify Me restores a natural pH balance, unclogs pores and removes toxins. While I can’t provide tangible proof, I totally believe that it did that for me.
Make the assessment for yourself; here is a list of the active ingredients in Purify Me:
- Argania Active Complex© is a natural cleanser. Prevents breakouts and irritation. Anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory, preventing post-sweat disorders. It restores the skin’s natural pH balance.
- Jojoba Beads gently but effectively exfoliate and purify your skin. They remove excess oils, dead skin cells, unclog pores, imparting a healthy glow and smooth skin texture
- Aloe-Vera soothes inflamed skin and generally nourishes the skin.
- Shea Butter is readily absorbed into the skin and effectively provides moisture without clogging pores. Ideal for skin that is prone to breakouts as it is non-comedogenic.
- Hamamelis is highly effective in purifying, cleansing and calming redness.
3rd Step: Revive Me
I liked this one! Disclaimer I have been known to gravitate towards anything that uses the catch phrase “serum”, but that’s just me. Revive Me is applied after cleansing. Just massage into your face until it’s completely absorbed. The way my skin feels after applying this serum is what sold me. It smells great-clean, and refreshing. I actually look forward to slathering this baby onto my skin. Is that normal? I’m not sure, but I’m not necessarily ashamed. These are the active ingredients in Revive Me. I took the liberty of putting the words I mostly look for in serums in bold, I suspect you might appreciate that 🙂
- Argania Active Complex© acts against sun damage, photo-aging, dark spots, environment pollutants and stress.
- Argan Stem Cells vitalize and protect dermal stem cells, restore skin’s youthful elasticity, reduce wrinkles, increase skin firmness and density. Foster deep-seated rejuvenation of the skin.
- Essential Fatty Acids help reduce the depth and severity of wrinkles.
- Sterols help retain moisture in the skin even in the most extreme weather conditions. They help keep the skin hydrated, and replenish lost minerals and vitamins.
- Hydroviton naturally regulates skin moisturizing, strengthens skin barrier and prevents dehydration.
- Matrixyl contains anti-wrinkle peptides, deeply moisturizing and firming the skin.
FRE SkinCare is 100% vegan, cruelty free and PETA certified.
Another great thing about FRE is that the organization cares about the world we live in. For every FRE Skincare set you buy they plant an Argan tree, also known as the “Tree of Life”, to help replenish the endangered Argan forest in Morocco, and support the women who harvest the Argan oil. I love that!
Planting Argan trees creates sustainable development and protects our planet.
FRE isn’t just for women who workout.
I hear you sports mom. The one who doesn’t have time to incorporate a workout in between practices, games, school events, mothering, and wife-ering. I get it. You still sweat though, right? I mean, there are days where I’ve been sitting in the horrid sun for hours, happily cheering on my favorite player, while I watch my face melt off. Literally. My eye make up ends up near my upper lip, and lip gloss is somewhere near my ankles. Those are the days where Protect Me can really come in handy. In fact, the entire 123FRE set is made for sweaty days exactly like those.
After using the 123FRE Set for a few weeks, I can honestly say that it’s a good product line. Other than alternating the sunscreen with my regular one, I have practically stopped using any other skincare products altogether. Post workouts, my skin feels fabulous! FRE promises anti aging, rejuvenating, protection for a post workout glow, celebrating beauty in motion. I like that, and after using it consistently I believe it!
